Prints

Prints are a large and important part of my body of work. Although I have explored several branches of the printmaking family, including intaglio, lithography, and monoprints, the relief print, using either linoleum or wood, has become my primary focus. I enjoy printmaking for the range of aesthetic possibilities it offers, for the technical challenges it presents, and for its accessibility to a wide audience. The printmaking aesthetics have served my painting process by allowing me to build many layers, which deepen the visual experience.

My explorations of mixed printing techniques with inserts of completely different processes, such as hand stitching, have produced interesting outcomes in my work like “ Mother, Mother, Mother …”.

Collagraphs

The collagraph matrix is created by adding layers of material to essentially make a textured relief surface. The collagraph plate when inked can be printed as an intaglio, taking information from top and bottom layers.

Relief Prints

Originally, relief prints were taken from the surface of carved wood blocks. The linoleum block, which was introduced as an alternative in the mid-20th century, is a flexible, rubbery material that holds up well under pressure from carving and printing. The process of carving away unwanted surface is similar to making a woodcut.
